Ubank Review 2026: Is It Australia’s Best Digital Bank?
5.85% p.a. welcome rate, zero international fees, and a $30 sign-up bonus — what’s the catch?
My verdict: One of the easiest 5%+ savings rates in Australia
After three years using Ubank as my everyday account, it remains my go-to recommendation for Australians who want a high-rate savings account without jumping through painful hoops. The new conditions (effective Oct 2025) are some of the easiest in the market — you just need to grow your balance by $1 each month.
| Welcome rate | 5.85% p.a. (4 months) |
| Ongoing rate | 5.10% p.a. |
| Sign-up bonus | $30 (code AFWLLL7) |
| Best for | Savers & travellers |
I’ve used a lot of Australian bank accounts. Ubank is the one I keep coming back to — and it’s the account I park my emergency fund in.
This isn’t a glossy “everything is amazing” review. Ubank changed its bonus interest conditions in October 2025 and again in February 2026, the rates moved, and there are still a few things competitors do better. So here’s the honest breakdown of what’s actually true about Ubank in 2026 — what I love, where it falls short, and whether the $30 sign-up bonus is worth bothering with.

How to get the $30 sign-up bonus
Ubank’s referral program is genuinely simple — no minimum deposit, no salary requirement, no hidden tier. You just need to make 5 card purchases. They can be tiny.
-
1
Download the Ubank app (App Store or Google Play) -
2
During signup, enter referral codeAFWLLL7on the “About you” screen — you can’t add it later -
3
Make 5 settled card purchases within 30 days — any amount, even five $1 transactions -
4
$30 lands in your Spend account within a few days of the 5th purchase
One catch: you need to be a new Ubank customer. If you’ve held a Ubank-branded account in the last 24 months, you’re not eligible for the $30 — and you also won’t get the welcome bonus rate on savings.
The 5.85% savings rate (and the small print)
Ubank’s Save account is currently one of the highest-paying savings accounts in Australia. The structure is two-tiered:
First 4 months for new customers
Ongoing, after the welcome period ends
Rates verified against ubank.com.au, May 2026. Welcome rate available only to customers who haven’t held a Ubank Save account in the last 24 months.
What you have to do to earn the bonus rate
Ubank changed these conditions in October 2025. The old “$300 monthly deposit” rule is gone. Now you just need to:
- Hold a Ubank Spend account alongside your Save account
- Grow your combined Save balance by at least $1 each calendar month (interest doesn’t count)
That’s it. No salary deposit. No transaction count. No “no withdrawals” rule. If you’re saving anything at all, you’ll meet the criteria.
How much you’d actually earn
Bonus interest is paid on combined Save balances up to $1,000,000. Real example, holding $20,000:
| Period | Rate | Interest earned |
|---|---|---|
| First 4 months | 5.85% p.a. | ~$390 |
| Months 5–12 | 5.10% p.a. | ~$680 |
| Year 1 total | — | ~$1,070 |
For comparison, a Big Four savings account base rate of around 0.05% p.a. would earn about $10 a year on the same $20,000. The difference is roughly $1,060 in year one.
Using Ubank overseas
This is the feature that sold me on Ubank originally. The Spend account charges zero international transaction fees and zero ATM fees from Ubank’s side, anywhere in the world. I’ve used my card across Southeast Asia and Europe without paying Ubank a cent for the privilege.
What’s free:
- International transaction fees (0%)
- Ubank ATM fees on overseas withdrawals
- Card replacement in Australia
- Emergency Visa replacement card overseas
What you might still pay:
- ATM operator fees — the foreign ATM owner can still slap you with their own fee. Ubank doesn’t reimburse these (ING does, which is the main reason some travellers prefer ING for cash withdrawals).
- Visa exchange rate spread — Ubank uses Visa’s exchange rates, which include a small markup vs the mid-market rate. It’s competitive but not the cheapest. Wise and Revolut still beat it on conversion if you’re spending serious money abroad.
For most travellers, Ubank as a primary card plus Wise as a backup for larger conversions is the combo I’d recommend.
Ubank vs Up vs Macquarie: which is best?
These are the three accounts most Australians end up choosing between. Here’s the head-to-head:
| Ubank Save ★ | Up Saver | Macquarie | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Welcome rate | 5.85% (4 mo) | — | 5.10% (4 mo) |
| Ongoing rate | 5.10% | 5.35% (“Grow”) | 4.75% (no conditions) |
| Bonus cap | $1,000,000 | $1,000,000 | $250,000 |
| Conditions | Grow balance by $1 | 5+ purchases & no withdrawals | None |
| Sign-up bonus | $30 (AFWLLL7) | $21 | None |
| Intl. fees | $0 | $0 | $0 |
My take: Ubank wins for most people because the conditions are easier than Up’s (no spending requirement, withdrawals allowed) and the rate is meaningfully higher than Macquarie’s. Up Bank is better if you want the slick design and travel perks. Macquarie is better if you absolutely refuse to deal with monthly conditions.
Is Ubank safe?
Yes — and “yes” with a bit more behind it than most digital-only banks. Ubank operates under NAB’s banking licence (it’s been wholly owned by NAB since 2021). Your deposits up to $250,000 per account holder are guaranteed by the Australian Government’s Financial Claims Scheme, the same protection you get at CommBank, Westpac, ANZ, or NAB itself.
It’s also regulated by APRA and ASIC — same oversight as the Big Four. App security covers biometric login, instant card freeze, and real-time fraud monitoring.
If you’re holding more than $250k, split it across multiple ADIs (separate banking groups) for full FCS coverage. The guarantee is per institution, not per account.
Honest pros & cons
What I love
- Genuinely easy bonus criteria (just $1 monthly growth)
- 5.85% welcome rate is the highest in the market right now
- Bonus interest paid on up to $1M (most caps are far lower)
- Zero international fees on the Spend card
- Multi-bank view — see all your other accounts in one app
- Backed by NAB; full FCS protection
- Withdrawals don’t kill your bonus interest
Where it falls short
- Base rate is 0% — miss the conditions, earn nothing that month
- Welcome rate only lasts 4 months, then drops to 5.10%
- Ubank doesn’t reimburse foreign ATM operator fees (ING does)
- Wise/Revolut offer better FX conversion for big international spending
- No physical branches if you ever need cash deposit
- Welcome rate excludes anyone who held a Ubank account in the last 24 months

Final verdict
Ubank in 2026 is a sharper product than it was a year ago. The bonus conditions got easier, the cap moved up to $1M, and the welcome rate is now market-leading. It’s genuinely the easiest 5%+ savings rate in Australia right now.
If you’re sitting on cash in a Big Four account earning 0.05%, this is one of the simplest swaps you can make. You won’t regret it.
