Ubank Review 2026: Is It Australia’s Best Digital Bank?

5.85% p.a. welcome rate, zero international fees, and a $30 sign-up bonus — what’s the catch?

★★★★½

My verdict: One of the easiest 5%+ savings rates in Australia

After three years using Ubank as my everyday account, it remains my go-to recommendation for Australians who want a high-rate savings account without jumping through painful hoops. The new conditions (effective Oct 2025) are some of the easiest in the market — you just need to grow your balance by $1 each month.

Welcome rate 5.85% p.a. (4 months)
Ongoing rate 5.10% p.a.
Sign-up bonus $30 (code AFWLLL7)
Best for Savers & travellers

I’ve used a lot of Australian bank accounts. Ubank is the one I keep coming back to — and it’s the account I park my emergency fund in.

This isn’t a glossy “everything is amazing” review. Ubank changed its bonus interest conditions in October 2025 and again in February 2026, the rates moved, and there are still a few things competitors do better. So here’s the honest breakdown of what’s actually true about Ubank in 2026 — what I love, where it falls short, and whether the $30 sign-up bonus is worth bothering with.

How to get the $30 sign-up bonus

The standard $30 referral offer requires five eligible card purchases settled within 30 days of joining, and both participants must be at least 18. Enter the code during signup by 30 September 2026. Do not confuse this with the expired 24–28 August $100 promotion, which had different purchase requirements.

  1. 1
Download the Ubank app (App Store or Google Play)
  2. 2
During signup, enter referral code AFWLLL7 on the “About you” screen — you can’t add it later
  3. 3
Make 5 settled card purchases within 30 days — any amount, even five $1 transactions
  4. $30 is paid to the Spend account after eligibility is met; allow up to 45 days rather than expecting payment immediately after the fifth purchase.
One thing to know: Lee benefits too — Ubank’s refer-a-friend program pays $30 to both of us once you complete the 5 purchases. So if you find this review useful, the code is the easiest way to say thanks.

The two offers have different eligibility rules. The $30 referral terms can exclude former customers who closed all their Spend and Save accounts within the preceding 12 months. The savings welcome rate instead requires no Ubank-branded product in the preceding 24 months. Both referrer and friend must be 18 or over for the referral reward.

The 5.85% savings rate (and the small print)

Ubank’s Save account is currently one of the highest-paying savings accounts in Australia. The structure is two-tiered:

Welcome Bonus Rate
First 4 months for new customers
5.85% p.a.

Everyday Bonus Rate
Ongoing, after the welcome period ends
5.10% p.a.

Base rate (if conditions not met)
0.00% p.a.

Ubank rates checked 14 September 2026: 5.85% p.a. welcome for eligible new customers for up to four months, then 5.10% p.a. ongoing, subject to monthly bonus-interest conditions. The welcome-rate test covers all Ubank-branded products, not only Save accounts.

What you have to do to earn the bonus rate

Ubank changed these conditions in October 2025. The old “$300 monthly deposit” rule is gone. Now you just need to:

  • Hold a Ubank Spend account alongside your Save account
  • Grow your combined Save balance by at least $1 each calendar month (interest doesn’t count)

Hold a Spend account and grow combined eligible Save balances by at least $1, excluding interest, by 11:30pm Sydney time on the last day of the month. Withdrawals must be replaced if necessary to meet that net-growth test. No fixed monthly deposit or card-purchase count applies to savings interest.

The catch: if you have a withdrawal-heavy month and finish lower than you started, you earn 0% for the entire month. The base rate is genuinely zero. So this isn’t great for accounts you’re actively spending down.

How much you’d actually earn

Bonus interest is paid on combined Save balances up to $1,000,000. Real example, holding $20,000:

Period Rate Interest earned
First 4 months 5.85% p.a. ~$390
Months 5–12 5.10% p.a. ~$680
Year 1 total ~$1,070

For comparison, a Big Four savings account base rate of around 0.05% p.a. would earn about $10 a year on the same $20,000. The difference is roughly $1,060 in year one.

Using Ubank overseas

This is the feature that sold me on Ubank originally. The Spend account charges zero international transaction fees and zero ATM fees from Ubank’s side, anywhere in the world. I’ve used my card across Southeast Asia and Europe without paying Ubank a cent for the privilege.

What’s free:

  • International transaction fees (0%)
  • Ubank ATM fees on overseas withdrawals
  • Card replacement in Australia
  • Emergency Visa replacement card overseas

What you might still pay:

  • ATM operator fees — the foreign ATM owner can still slap you with their own fee. Ubank doesn’t reimburse these (check any alternative bank’s current rebate terms).
  • Visa exchange rate spread — Ubank uses Visa’s exchange rates, which include a small markup vs the mid-market rate. It’s competitive but not the cheapest. Wise and Revolut still beat it on conversion if you’re spending serious money abroad.

For most travellers, Ubank as a primary card plus Wise as a backup for larger conversions is the combo I’d recommend.

Ubank vs Up vs Macquarie: which is best?

These are the three accounts most Australians end up choosing between. Here’s the head-to-head:

Ubank Save ★ Up Saver Macquarie
Welcome rate 5.85% (4 mo) Check current Macquarie rate
Ongoing rate 5.10% 5.35% (“Grow”) Check current Macquarie rate
Bonus cap $1,000,000 $250,000 individual Grow cap; separate 2Up cap Check current balance tiers
Conditions Hold Spend; grow combined eligible Save balance by $1/month, excluding interest Five qualifying purchases/month; no withdrawals from that Saver for Grow None
Sign-up bonus $30 (AFWLLL7) $21 None
Intl. fees $0 $0 $0

My take: Ubank wins for most people because the conditions are easier than Up’s (no spending requirement, withdrawals allowed) and the rate is meaningfully higher than Macquarie’s. Up Bank is better if you want the slick design and travel perks. Macquarie is better if you absolutely refuse to deal with monthly conditions.

Up and Ubank: offer and account conditions

Up: ordinary Savers earn 5.35% p.a. Grow when untouched, up to the combined $250,000 individual Grow cap, or 2.00% p.a. Flow when accessed. First make five qualifying debit-card purchases in the calendar month; otherwise ordinary Savers earn 0.00%. The 2Up Grow cap is separate. Essentials earns 2.00% Flow without the purchase requirement until 28 February 2027. Up rates and conditions.

Up travel: no Up international transaction or ATM-withdrawal fee; ATM operators can charge separately. The card uses Mastercard’s exchange rate. Daily withdrawal limits still apply: the standard ATM cash-out limit is $1,000, subject to approved variations. Up currently advises allowing 15–20 business days for a physical card. Up travel information.

Up invitation: The SCONS referral offer is up to $21, subject to the amount shown when you join. Complete signup and identity verification within the invitation’s terms; amounts and availability can change. Read the referral conditions before relying on a bonus.

Ubank Save: 5.10% p.a. ongoing bonus interest; eligible new customers can earn 5.85% p.a. for up to four months. Hold a Spend account and grow combined eligible Save balances by $1 per month, excluding interest, by 11:30pm Sydney time on the last day. Withdrawals can make you miss this test. Bonus interest is paid on up to $1 million per customer; offset-linked balances are excluded. Ubank savings conditions.

Ubank referral: the standard $30 offer currently covers eligible signups through 30 September 2026. Enter AFWLLL7 during signup; both people must be 18 or over. Five eligible card purchases must settle within the first 30 days. Payment can take up to 45 days after qualification. Returning-customer restrictions apply and differ from the savings welcome-rate rules. Full referral terms.

Deposit protection: eligible Up deposits share Bendigo and Adelaide Bank’s $250,000-per-person FCS limit; Ubank deposits share NAB’s limit. These are limits per person per institution, not per account. Rates are variable. Account eligibility and identity checks apply.

Is Ubank safe?

Ubank is part of National Australia Bank Limited. Eligible deposits share NAB’s $250,000-per-person Financial Claims Scheme limit with your other NAB deposits. Opening extra Ubank Save accounts does not create extra FCS coverage.

It’s also regulated by APRA and ASIC — same oversight as the Big Four. App security covers biometric login, instant card freeze, and real-time fraud monitoring.

If you’re holding more than $250k, split it across multiple ADIs (separate banking groups) for full FCS coverage. The guarantee is per institution, not per account.

Honest pros & cons

What I love

  • Genuinely easy bonus criteria (just $1 monthly growth)
  • 5.85% p.a. introductory rate for eligible new customers; compare current alternatives and conditions
  • Bonus interest paid on up to $1M (most caps are far lower)
  • Zero international fees on the Spend card
  • Multi-bank view — see all your other accounts in one app
  • Backed by NAB; full FCS protection
  • Withdrawals are allowed, but can cost the month’s bonus interest if net savings growth is not met

Where it falls short

  • No interest is payable if the bonus-interest conditions are not met
  • Welcome rate only lasts 4 months, then drops to 5.10%
  • Ubank doesn’t reimburse foreign ATM operator fees (check any alternative bank’s current rebate terms)
  • Wise/Revolut offer better FX conversion for big international spending
  • No physical branches if you ever need cash deposit
  • Welcome rate excludes anyone who held a Ubank account in the last 24 months

Frequently asked questions

Is Ubank the same as 86 400?
Yes. Ubank was originally called 86 400 — the name referred to the seconds in a day. After NAB acquired it in 2021, the rebrand to Ubank kept the same product. Same bank, new name.
What if I don’t grow my balance one month?
You earn 0% interest for that entire month. The base rate is genuinely zero — there’s no fallback. As long as you finish the month with at least $1 more than you started (excluding interest credits), you get the bonus rate on your full balance.
How long does the $30 bonus take to arrive?
Within a few days of your 5th settled card purchase, deposited straight into your Spend account. Make sure all 5 purchases settle within 30 days of opening the account, not just authorise.
Can I deposit cash without branches?
Yes, at any Australia Post outlet that offers Bank@Post — fees may apply. Honestly, most Ubank customers never need to. PayID transfers from another account are instant and free.
Can I use Ubank as my main bank account?
Yes. The Spend account works as a full transaction account — direct debits, BPAY, PayID, salary deposits, the lot. Pair it with the Save account and a Bills account for separate buckets and it becomes a genuinely good main bank.
Is the 5.85% welcome rate really fee-free?
Yes — no monthly fees, no minimum balance. The only requirement is meeting the bonus condition (grow your Save balance by $1 monthly). After 4 months your rate drops to 5.10%, which is still one of the better ongoing rates in the market.
Why isn’t the welcome bonus available to existing customers?
Both the $30 referral bonus and the 5.85% welcome rate are restricted to new customers (no Ubank-branded account in the last 24 months). It’s a customer acquisition tool. Existing customers still earn the everyday bonus rate of 5.10%.

Final verdict

★★★★½  4.5 / 5

Ubank offers a competitive introductory rate and a larger bonus-interest balance limit than many accounts. The trade-off is the monthly net-growth condition: a withdrawal can mean losing the month’s interest unless you replace it and finish sufficiently higher.

Compare your existing rate, likely withdrawals and ability to meet the monthly conditions before switching. The headline rate only helps if you qualify for it.
