Travelpayouts Review: My Experience Running Two Blogs

Travelpayouts is useful when you already create travel content and want one place to manage several travel affiliate programmes. I use it across Backpacking Is Life and MoneyHackHQ. My recommendation is to start with a few relevant links on useful articles, then measure them before adding more tools.

It suits a publisher with readers making travel decisions. It is a poor answer to “how can I get paid just for signing up?” and it does not replace the work of building an audience.

Disclosure: we use Travelpayouts for travel affiliate links. If you join through our creator referral link and meet the programme conditions, we may earn a referral reward. This influences our commercial relationship; the limitations below still matter.

My verdict: useful infrastructure, with work left for you

Best fit
Travel blogs, guides and creators helping readers choose bookings.
My preferred starting tool
A destination or product link generated in your own account.
The main limitation
A correctly tracked link still needs the right reader and a relevant offer.
What I would measure
Article traffic, affiliate clicks, bookings, confirmed commission and paid revenue.

What I actually use it for

The two sites cover different reader needs. Backpacking Is Life has destination, transport, accommodation, car rental and eSIM guides. MoneyHackHQ covers money decisions, including the costs of travelling. A shared travel affiliate dashboard is helpful, but I still need to distinguish the sites and the recommendations that produced the activity.

The account’s payout history includes GetYourGuide, DiscoverCars, Trip.com, 12Go and eSIM commissions. That confirms actual use; it does not establish the conversion rate of every article or prove that any one programme will earn for your audience.

One practical lesson from the reports is timing. A payout month can contain bookings from previous months. I would not judge a new placement solely by whether money arrived in the same week it was published.

What the platform provides

You can register for free, add a project such as your blog, and select travel affiliate tools. These include links, search forms, widgets and the Drive tools. Programme-specific information belongs in the current programme details rather than a universal commission promise. Travelpayouts explains the platform here.

I would begin with links because they give you control over the recommendation and where it appears. A search form can make sense when the article calls for a search. A widget that is hard to read on a phone adds friction, even if it looks impressive in a desktop preview.

Advantages for a small publisher

  • Less fragmented administration: several travel programmes can be managed through one account.
  • Relevant destinations: a generated link can connect an article’s advice with the booking the reader is considering.
  • Reporting to investigate: booking and payout views help separate activity from money received.
  • A gradual starting point: you can improve a few existing pages before investing time in a large content rollout.

Limitations I would not hide

You still need an audience. A new blog with no useful content will not gain buyers just because it has affiliate buttons. Equally, readers may click while researching, compare other sites or return much later. Attribution and programme conditions affect whether a booking becomes your commission.

Pending bookings are not cash received. Cancellations, confirmation and payment timing can change the outcome. Keep those statuses separate when comparing programmes.

There is also a design cost. Too many providers, popups, forms and unrelated CTAs make an article harder to navigate. The platform gives you options; the publisher has to choose which ones serve the reader.

Travelpayouts referral bonuses: what joining through my link means

Eligible new creators can unlock up to US$100: US$25 for qualifying website setup, US$25 at US$100 qualified revenue and US$50 at US$1,000. The setup bonus cannot be withdrawn until US$50 qualified revenue.

I can receive up to US$600 in staged rewards when an eligible referred creator reaches US$500, US$1,500 and US$3,000 qualified revenue and completes the required withdrawal. Signup alone does not pay me. Paid qualifying bookings count; cancellations and reversals can affect eligibility. Existing accounts are not new referrals. These are US-dollar amounts and conditions can change. Read the current referral programme terms before relying on a bonus.

The commercial relationship is a reason to be transparent, not a reason to recommend the platform to someone without a suitable project. Choose it for the tools and programme fit first.

Travelpayouts or joining programmes directly?

Compare the current terms for the specific brand you intend to promote. A direct relationship may suit a publisher concentrating on one provider, while a shared platform may reduce administration across several travel categories. Do not assume one arrangement always pays more.

Compare the commission basis, attribution rules, payout process, available destinations and reporting you need. A higher headline percentage does not help if your reader cannot find an appropriate product.

How I would begin with an existing blog

Pick five pages with clear reader decisions. On each, record one suitable programme, one destination or product link and one meaningful placement. Add disclosure, check the mobile layout and record the starting traffic and clicks.

The Travelpayouts setup tutorial walks through that process. The free worksheet gives you somewhere to write the plan. If you want the broader context, read how the travel blog makes money.

A referral reward depends on eligibility and earning milestones. We do not promise earnings from signup, publishing volume or a particular tool.
