Fuel-Saving Apps Australia: Price Tools and Discounts
The best fuel-saving setup in Australia is usually not one app. It is a mix of price-checking, timing, and one or two discounts that actually survive real life.
Fuel offer snapshot: 10 October 2026. Cashback rates can change. Compare the final pump price, participating stations, expiry dates and member conditions before buying.
Quick navigation
Quick Verdict
Price-lock option: 7-Eleven Fuel Lock, because it can save up to 25c per litre for up to 150 litres over 7 days.
Gift-card cashback option: AmpolCash through ShopBack. The displayed A$25 card offers 2.5% cashback as at 10 October 2026; check your chosen card’s current rate and redemption locations before prepaying.
Best no-nonsense price app: your official state tool where available, especially FuelCheck in NSW and Servo Saver in Victoria.
Best all-round habit: use a price app first, then add one discount you can actually redeem without making the whole process annoying.
Fuel saving in Australia is not really about finding one magic app that destroys everyone else. It is more about understanding which tool solves which problem.
- Price-checking apps help you avoid paying the worst local price.
- Fuel-cycle tools help you decide whether to fill now or wait.
- Direct discounts like 7-Eleven Fuel Lock or membership deals reduce what you actually pay.
- Gift-card cashback is the boring but effective extra layer.

Best Overall Fuel-Saving Picks
| Tool | Best for | Offer details | Main catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7-Eleven Fuel Lock | Biggest single direct discount | Up to 25c/L saving, valid for 7 days, for up to 150L | You cannot combine Fuel Lock with other fuel-price offers in the app. |
| Petrol Spy | National all-round app | Real-time map coverage for QLD, SA, NSW, WA, TAS and NT, plus user-submitted prices in Victoria | Not every state is equally official; Victoria relies on user submissions in the app listing I checked. |
| ShopBack + AmpolCash | Repeatable cashback discount | A$25 AmpolCash card: displayed 2.5% cashback on 10 October 2026 | Use only if you already buy fuel at a participating location. ShopBack currently warns that EG Ampol redemption is unavailable. |
| Official state apps | Reliable local price comparisons | FuelCheck NSW, Servo Saver Victoria, FuelWatch WA, MyFuel NT | These are strongest when you live in the state they are built for. |
1. 7-Eleven Fuel Lock: Limits and Expiry
7-Eleven Fuel Lock holds a local 7-Eleven price for your chosen fuel grade for up to 7 days. Redeem it once at a 7-Eleven fuel store that sells that grade, for up to 150 litres and a maximum saving of 25 cents per litre. Compare the actual pump price with nearby competitors before choosing where to fill up.
The fine print matters, though. 7-Eleven also says Fuel Lock is based on the best local price among the nearest stores it checks, not a live comparison of all fuel retailers. And its terms explicitly say that when you redeem a Fuel Lock, other app-based fuel-price offers are void for that transaction.
Best for
- drivers who can flex when and where they fill up
- people in cities where 7-Eleven stores have meaningful local price gaps
- anyone who wants a simple visible discount instead of waiting for cashback
2. Best National Price App: Petrol Spy
Petrol Spy is still the broadest all-rounder if you want one app that travels reasonably well across Australia. The current App Store listing says it compares fuel prices by map for QLD, SA, NSW, WA, TAS and NT, includes fuel price cycle graphs for major cities, uses FuelCheck prices for NSW and FuelWatch prices for WA, and relies on user-submitted prices in Victoria.
That last part is important. Petrol Spy is useful, but it is not equally “official” in every state. So I like it best as a national comparison tool, not as the only thing you trust blindly.
State Fuel-Price Tools
| State | Price tool | What it does | Practical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| NSW / ACT | FuelCheck | Real-time prices, alerts, trip planning and local day-of-week trends | It is one of the most complete official consumer fuel tools in the country. |
| Victoria | Servo Saver in the Service Victoria app | Real-time statewide prices, no ads, official reporting | Victoria now has a properly official fuel app, which is a big step up. |
| Western Australia | FuelWatch | Official WA best-price view and station lookup | Perth’s short price cycle makes timing especially useful. |
| Northern Territory | MyFuel NT | Real-time prices and availability via web app | Simple, official, and built for comparison across NT regions. |
| Queensland | RACQ Fuel and Deals / Fair Fuel | Price comparison, fair fuel guidance and member discounts | Good blend of price tracking and actual buying advice. |
| South Australia | RAA app + RAA fuel map | Real-time state price data and member savings markers | Especially good if you are already an RAA member. |
3. Best NSW / ACT Official Tool: FuelCheck
The NSW Government says FuelCheck is a free service that provides real-time fuel prices, helps you find the cheapest fuel in your area, lets you set price alerts, and even shows day-of-week trends through its “Trends” feature. That is unusually good for an official government tool.
If you live in NSW or the ACT, FuelCheck is one of the few tools I would absolutely install before bothering with anything fancier.
4. Best Victoria Tool Right Now: Servo Saver
Victoria is much better than it used to be on this. Service Victoria says Servo Saver shows up-to-the-minute prices from every fuel station across the state, and Consumer Affairs Victoria says all Victorian fuel retailers have to report their prices. From 10 March 2026, Victoria also moved to daily price caps, with prices feeding into Servo Saver.
That combination makes Servo Saver one of the most trustworthy official fuel tools in Australia right now.
5. Best WA Tool: FuelWatch
FuelWatch remains the obvious WA answer. Its mobile site still shows best prices available from 6:00am for different Perth regions and fuel types. That matters because the ACCC says Perth’s average petrol price cycle in 2024 was around 1 week, much shorter than cities like Sydney or Melbourne.
Short version: in WA, timing matters a lot, and FuelWatch is still built for that reality.
6. Best NT Tool: MyFuel NT
NT Consumer Affairs says MyFuel NT publishes all fuel price data in real time and helps consumers compare prices in their local area or any suburb or region across the NT. It is a web app rather than a flashy mainstream mobile brand, but that is fine. It does the actual job.
Best Direct Fuel Discounts
| Discount | Offer snapshot: 10 October 2026 | Who it suits | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7-Eleven Fuel Lock | Up to 25c/L, 150L max, 7-day expiry | Flexible metro drivers | Not stackable with other 7-Eleven fuel-price offers. |
| AmpolCash via ShopBack | A$25 card: displayed 2.5% cashback on 10 October 2026 | Ampol regulars | Check participating Ampol sites and card expiry; ShopBack currently warns against redemption at EG Ampol. |
| BP via ShopBack | A$5 card: displayed 1% cashback on 10 October 2026 | BP users who want a simple small discount | One card per transaction; participating BP stores only. Cards expire 36 months after purchase. |
| RACQ | 4c/L at participating Caltex sites; maximum 120L per day | Queenslanders already in the RACQ ecosystem | Member-only and not stackable with every other offer. |
| RAA | Temporary 20c/L: noon 9 October to 11:59pm 11 October 2026; maximum 120L per day | South Australians who already have RAA membership | RAA members at participating SA stations only. Scan a valid card; cannot combine with another offer. Check the rate after 11 October. |
If you want the cashback angle specifically, my separate guide on saving on petrol with Ampol gift cards goes deeper on that method.
A Simple Fuel-Saving Setup
- Use the best official local price tool for your state first.
- Keep Petrol Spy as the broader backup if you travel or want a second check.
- Use 7-Eleven Fuel Lock only when the locked price is genuinely good.
- Use AmpolCash via ShopBack if Ampol is already part of your normal routine.
- If you are already paying for RACQ or RAA membership, actually use the fuel discount instead of ignoring it.
I would not try to run every fuel discount at once. That is how you end up with a messy system you stop using. One app for prices, one direct discount, and one cashback angle is plenty.
For drivers in the five largest cities, the ACCC also says petrol price cycles still matter. On March 20, 2026, the ACCC’s current guidance said it updates buying tips for Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth three times a week. That is a useful reminder that timing can matter almost as much as brand.
The 6 Mistakes That Stop Fuel Apps Saving You Money
- Using only one app. Different tools are best for different states and discount types.
- Driving too far to save too little. A cheaper servo is not a win if you burn the saving getting there.
- Forgetting expiry rules. Fuel Lock is only good for 7 days and one use.
- Assuming discounts stack. 7-Eleven explicitly says Fuel Lock voids other app fuel-price offers.
- Ignoring the price cycle. ACCC buying tips exist for a reason.
- Prepaying fuel at the wrong brand. Gift-card cashback only works if you were already likely to use that station.
If you like the cashback and gift-card side of this, these two guides fit naturally with this post: best discounted gift cards in Australia and how I stack gift cards, cashback and sale prices.
Best Simple Fuel-Saving Setup
Use your state’s best price tool, keep Petrol Spy as backup, use 7-Eleven Fuel Lock selectively, and add AmpolCash only if Ampol is already part of your real routine.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best fuel app in Australia right now?
If you want one broad answer, Petrol Spy is the best all-round national app. But if you want the best answer for your state, the official tool is often better, especially FuelCheck in NSW and Servo Saver in Victoria.
What is the best direct fuel discount in Australia?
The best discount depends on the final pump price and where you fill up. Fuel Lock can save up to 25c/L on up to 150L, while membership and cashback offers have different conditions. Compare the net cost rather than the largest advertised discount.
Is Fuel Lock better than cashback gift cards?
Not always. Fuel Lock can be bigger in the right moment, but cashback gift cards like AmpolCash can be easier to repeat if you already use that brand regularly.
Do fuel price cycles still matter in Australia?
Yes. The ACCC still publishes buying tips for the five largest cities because price cycles remain a real part of how regular unleaded moves in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.
What is the best Victoria fuel app now?
Servo Saver in the Service Victoria app is now the strongest official Victoria answer because it uses reported statewide fuel prices and is backed by mandatory reporting rules.
