Flybuys Dollars vs Velocity Points
Money off your shopping or points towards a flight? Compare both options, then check whether a reward seat gives you better value.
Updated 27 October 2026 · By Lee
The number to beat is 1 cent per Velocity Point. At the standard transfer rate, 2,000 Flybuys points can become $10 in Flybuys Dollars or 1,000 Velocity Points. A flight needs to save you more than $10 per 1,000 Velocity Points, after its cash charges, to beat the shopping value.
If you have no flight in mind, money off shopping you already need is a useful reward. A higher theoretical flight value is only useful if you can book a trip you want.

Flybuys Dollars are shopping credit, not withdrawable cash. Redemptions use 2,000-point blocks; Velocity transfers use 1,000-point blocks. Large shopping values may need redeeming in stages because the Flybuys Dollars account limit is $4,999.
Have a flight quote? Check whether it beats shopping credit
Use a cash flight you would actually book, with comparable baggage and flexibility. Enter the reward quote for the same number of passengers and the same one-way or return journey.
This is a value comparison, not a guaranteed saving or booking quote. The benchmark values points at the standard conversion rate, including fractional shopping blocks; it is not an exact Flybuys Dollars redemption. Points and status credits you might earn on a paid fare are not valued.
What are your Flybuys points worth?
The Flybuys Dollars conversion is 2,000 points for $10 in shopping credit. The standard Velocity transfer is 1,000 Flybuys points for 500 Velocity Points.
| Flybuys points | Shopping credit | Velocity Points |
|---|---|---|
| 2,000 | $10 | 1,000 |
| 10,000 | $50 | 5,000 |
| 20,000 | $100 | 10,000 |
| 50,000 | $250 | 25,000 |
| 100,000 | $500 | 50,000 |
A balance of 2,500 points, for example, gives you $10 in shopping credit with 500 Flybuys points left over, or 1,000 Velocity Points with the same 500 left over. The calculator keeps those unused points visible.
When to choose each option
Choose Flybuys Dollars when…
- You will use the credit for eligible shopping you already planned.
- You want a predictable discount rather than waiting for a flight.
- You cannot find suitable reward seats or do not have enough points for the trip.
Consider Velocity when…
- You have found an available reward seat for a trip you want.
- The cash fare avoided, less reward charges, beats the shopping value.
- The dates, airports and fare conditions work for you.
You do not have to convert your whole balance. Keeping points unconverted while you decide avoids committing them to a reward you may not use. Check both programs’ current account and expiry rules if you plan to hold points for a long time.
How to value a Velocity flight properly
(Comparable cash fare − reward taxes and fees) ÷ Velocity Points used × 100
For an illustrative $250 flight costing 10,000 Velocity Points plus $45, the points replace $205 of cash spending. That is 2.05 cents per Velocity Point. The 20,000 Flybuys points needed for that transfer could instead buy $100 in shopping credit, so the flight delivers $105 more value on these assumptions.
Now suppose a suitable cash ticket costs only $120. With the same points and $45 fees, the flight value falls to $75, or 0.75 cents per point. The $100 shopping option is ahead by $25. These are examples, not live fares.
Use a realistic alternative price. If you would buy a $250 economy ticket, a $2,000 business fare is not automatically $2,000 of money saved. You might still prefer the upgrade in comfort, but that is a different decision.
Velocity reward pricing and cash charges depend on the flight. Search your dates before transferring: a conversion does not reserve a seat. Check baggage, changes, cancellation fees and any rewards you forgo by not buying a paid fare.
Manual transfer or auto-transfer?
Link your Flybuys and Velocity accounts to transfer. You can choose a manual amount in eligible blocks or enable auto-transfer. Auto-transfer sends eligible existing points as well as future 1,000-point blocks to Velocity.
Manual transfer gives you more control over the shopping-versus-flight decision. Auto-transfer can be convenient if you consistently want Velocity Points, but it commits eligible points without a fresh comparison each time. Read the official Flybuys–Velocity transfer rules before enabling it.
Promotional transfer bonuses can change the calculation. This calculator uses the standard rate and does not assume you qualify for a bonus. Check the offer’s dates, registration requirements and caps; do not spend extra just to earn a reward.
Common questions
Is 1 Flybuys point worth the same as 1 Velocity Point?
No. At the standard rate, two Flybuys points transfer to one Velocity Point. Shopping credit gives 0.5 cents per Flybuys point, which is why the equivalent Velocity benchmark is 1 cent.
Can I withdraw Flybuys Dollars to my bank account?
No. They are credit for eligible purchases at participating retailers, rather than cash you can withdraw. Check the Flybuys Dollars spending rules and exclusions.
Are Velocity Points always the better deal?
No. A low cash fare, high reward fees, unavailable seats or a trip you would not otherwise take can make shopping credit more useful. Compare an actual booking rather than a headline points valuation.
What if I already have Velocity Points?
The flight value calculation still works. The balance check only counts points supplied by your entered Flybuys balance; add your existing Velocity balance yourself when checking whether you can book. Do not transfer more than you need.
